Not surprisingly, I find the Women’s World Cup to me one of the most interesting, televised, sports events to watch.
With this particular World Cup, FIFA has taken a better stance on head injuries as highlighted by the USA v. Nigeria game. This is a really important issue to me. As someone who has suffered a concussion while playing in game, watching most of the head-to-head compact reminds me of my concussions. Seeing Abby Wambach lying on the pitch with her hands on her head sent shivers down by spine. However what calmed me down was seeing FIFA officials and doctors running on the field making sure that both players did not sustain a concussion, and were not symptomatic of a brain injury. In addition to seeing FIFA take a stance and more proactive role regarding head to head contact during the game, it was also a relief to see players wearing head gear to further protect themselves. Some players were wearing them because they were returning after recovering from a concussion, and that was important to show as well – that you can come back with the proper protection and medical attention. Thank you FIFA, and the players, who are finally getting behind the fact that concussions are a real issue that needs to be addressed. - Alex, June 2015
